APRIL 2007
We have already competed at three international championships
during 2007 and have another two big regattas before the
470 World Championships in Cascais, Portugal during July.
The
year started with a trip to Miami where we competed in two
events and did a weeks training, it was the first time we
had been to Miami to compete in a 470 event, it proved a
really good winter training venue being very warm and the
wind was generally good.
The first event was the North American
Championships, we used this event to test some new equipment
and get in some race practice it served its purpose well
and we finished 5th overall. After six days training we then
entered the Miami Olympic classes regatta, this was purely
a performance event for us and it went very well, there was
a really good fleet with almost every top 20 boat attending
and we won quite comfortably. The wind was shifty and we
had a big range of conditions and we managed to stay consistent
and ended the regatta 20 points ahead of the next boat.
February and March were spent with training camps in Palma,
Majorca. It is an excellent winter training venue with reliable
winds and mild weather. We used the time to practice some
new ideas for stronger winds and confirm equipment we want
to use during the upcoming events.
Princess Sofia was the next event and it ended up being
a disappointing one for us, we finished the event in 20th
position. We both hate making excuses for poor results and
definitely made mistakes but also felt as though the racing
on our racecourse was poor. There were over 250 boats on
our course and that coupled with unstable conditions meant
the racing was a bit of a mess, we made a bad start to the
event and with the event losing three scheduled races to
no wind it was difficult to get back to the front of the
fleet.
We have both just had a weeks break for Easter and now are
ready for the next event, Hyeres regatta (south France).
Both of us really like Hyeres as an event, the racing is
normally of a really good standard and it is commonly regarded
as the biggest regatta outside of the Olympic, World and
European championships. We have about four days training
then racing is between 21st – 28th April, results can
be found on www.sailing.org or go to our website and look up the news section for regular
updates.
