October 2001
After a busy summer it has been really nice to have some
time off. We had our fitness tests last week, which went fairly
well. I did not do the aerobic test as I had a cold and high
temperature. At the test they measure your aerobic fitness
by taking blood samples during exercise, they measure how
quickly you are building up lactic acid the slower it builds
up the fitter you are, they also measure your lung efficiency.
They also do a strength test for upper and lower body. For
upper body they attach your leg via a chain to a piece a of
equipment that measures how hard you can extend your leg in
Newton's, for your body they do the same but with your arm.
During your test you also get weighed and your fat content
measured with callipers. I had a low fat content about (10%)
and did well on the lower body strength test, but my upper
body strength was not so good, so I will get down to the gym
and work on this, the good thing was that I was quite light
so can afford to put some muscle on.
Next week we are training down in Weymouth, there is an RYA
Olympic classes training camp from Monday - Friday. Then at
the weekend we have our National championships, which we would
obviously like to win, I will send an update on Monday 29th
October to let you know how we got on.
