September 2001

470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - 11/09/01

Today was the first day of qualifying the racing was delayed for an hour while the wind came in, then sailing got away with a wind of 5 knots building to 10 knots. We got a 10th, 2nd, 2nd which was enough to put us top our group. So now we have a comfortable day tomorrow as we only need the top 12 to qualify for the Gold fleet. In the girls Josie Gibson and Saskia Clarke did well winning the 2nd race. I must go now to eat some pasta and have some rest.

470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - 13/09/01

Today was the first day of the finals, it is nice to finally get underway. We started on time for the first time today. The wind was 10-15 knots offshore so was very unstable. Everybody struggled with the conditions, except the Australian team of Nathan Wilmot / Malcom Page, who got a 1st, 3rd, 3rd. After them in 2nd place is the Ukraine team, then the Israel team, we are in 4th place, which is surprising as today our results were 9th, 17th, 1st. It is very close we are just 6 points ahead of 10th. So tomorrow we will try and be more consistent and hold our place.

470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - 17/09/01

We have had a fairly hectic couple of days, and we are left with the last race to be sailed tomorrow. We have been sailing a bit inconsistently, but today we got a 1st, 2nd, 1st. This puts us up to 2nd overall. The Ukraine's are 1st and do not need to sail the last race. We are only 1 point in front of the Australian team and just 6 points ahead of the Spanish who are 4th. The weather has been far from typical Mediterranean it has rained nearly everyday and the winds have been quite unstable and strong. I am not sure what the forecast is for tomorrow but if we race well I am confident we can get a top 3 overall.

Final Day of the World Championships

The last day of racing was cancelled due to no wind which gave us 2nd place overall, with the Ukraine team Braslavets/Matvienko coming in 1st. Wilmot/Page from Australia took the Bronze. We are over the moon with the result and to come back strongly at the end was really pleasing, we have had a good week celebrating! The Worlds really marked the end of the 2001 international season, we still have our National Championships left in Weymouth at the end of October, but in general the season is quite. Our 2002 World championships, which were to be held at Doha in March, have been cancelled, and will now be held in September, the venue is to be confirmed. I have a fitness test next week so despite a lack of competition I have been training hard to make sure I get a good score. We are expecting a new boat in January so if you think of any good names please email them to us! I will let you know the results of my fitness test next week.
