Sponsorship

Sailing has now been Great Britains most successful sport at the past two Olympic Games, winning a total of ten medals. The British sailing team has become renowned for being organized, professional and completely dedicated to the task of winning medals at international events.

Nick and Joe have been part of the British Sailing team for the last eight years and are one of the teams most consistent performers and highest profile sailors, both are involved in Sailing in many different areas on top of their Olympic 470 campaign including coaching, public speaking and yacht racing.

There are a number of different ways and levels in which companies can get involved with Nick and Joe and the clean, dynamic sport of Sailing.

Sailing has some unique advantages over all other sports; not least is it's massive following from the Olympic sailors to the occasional day sailor, millions participate and follow the sport, often in the coveted AB1 social profiles that sponsors are keen to reach.

Whilst most athletes only have their clothing to place advertising on Sailing has a boat and sail area that can carry huge amounts of advertising effectively working like a billboard for sponsors. Whilst most athletes train behind closed doors in gyms, we are training on the water at sea-side venues in the public eye, often at popular tourist resorts.

Due to the nature of the sport sailors need to gain experience by regularly competing at international events during the years prior to the Olympics. This gives the sponsor a huge amount of international coverage. In the four years prior to the Sydney Olympics Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield competed in over fifty events in sixteen different countries.

World Class performers like Nick and Joe need World Class support, and sailing like may other sports use the World Class Performance Programme money to fund:

  1. World Class Coaches
  2. Sports science and medicine back-up
  3. Warm-weather and acclimatisation training
  4. International competition programmes (including travel and accommodation)
  5. Athlete development programmes
  6. Training facilities
  7. Performance Directors to bring it all together.

Through the sport's national governing body, the RYA, the funding received from WCP is used to provide the athletes with the support they need.

Targets are set and agreed between the two organisations, and the RYA sets about administering schemes and implementing systems to meet these targets through the support team at RYA House.

Elite athletes make many sacrifices in their quest to represent their country at the highest levels. In recognition of this fact, Athlete Personal Awards are paid to athletes on sports' World Class Performance Programmes. These awards are not salaries but a contribution to ensure that athletes can train and perform to the highest levels and, if they wish, work more flexibly, or indeed train full-time to ensure that as much time as necessary is dedicated towards training and competing. The awards are a contribution towards basic living costs, personal training and sports equipment costs. Athletes may also apply for a contribution towards education costs.

Contributions are calculated on the basis of personal circumstances and according to the athlete's performance level and world ranking. These awards are seldom enough to provide a sole income, however, they provide substantial help towards giving athletes the flexibility they need to concentrate on their sport.
